Fearing a termite infestation? Check out if these top five telltale signs of a termite infestation match up in your Gold Coast or Brisbane home.

Here are the five signs of a termite infestation that you should look out for (and get the help of a professional building and pest inspection service).

1. You hear noises in the walls

Don’t worry – this isn’t one of those ‘I’m losing my mind’ moments when you think you can hear strange things that no one else can. If you hear clicking, tapping and creaking noises in the walls, chances are your ears are right, it’s termites!

This is a real phenomenon that’s been titled ‘headbanging’. Now you might be thinking, “What? Those nasty termites get to have a wicked feed on my house, and now they want to have a rock concert in my walls? Talk about unwanted visitors!”

Although it may sound like it, when talking termites, the term ‘headbanging’ does not have a connection to the movement usually performed at heavy-metal concerts.

Nope, it’s just another thing to add to the long list of a termite’s most hated qualities- loud eating.

In seriousness, if you hear these ‘headbanging’ noises – it’s the sound of the worker termites eating. Try listening out for this telltale termite sign.

2. Flying black ‘ants’
(spoiler: they’re not ants!)

You might be sitting around the flying ants termites image for the five signs of termite infestation to look out fordinner table when you see a few black flying ‘ants’ attracted to the ceiling light above you. Not much to feel alarmed about, right?

In actuality, these little guys could very well be flying termites, otherwise known as ‘swarmers’. Swarmers come about after there has been a termite population within the home for three to five years.

Commonly, they are attracted to light sources, so you may see them hovering around your lamps and ceiling lights at night.

And if you haven’t noticed them flying- check your windowsills and floors for any tiny wings.

Yes, that’s right, wings. Finding an abundance of small, semi-transparent termite wings is another way to see if you’ve got swarmers about.

Of course, contact your local pest inspection service if you notice any of these signs. Better to be safe than sorry!

3. Changes in the floorboards

If you’re walking from one room to the next and suddenly feel the surface underfoot has gone from a sturdy, hard timber to a soft, springy wood… stop and think about what this could mean.

If we’re talking termites, this means termites have made their way to the subfloor where softer wood is found- eating away at the wood and lifting your floorboards. Not something you want in your Gold Coast or Brisbane home.

4. ‘Sawdust’ on the floors

Have you beenimage of termite frass that looks like sawdust for the five signs of termite infestation blog stuck wondering why sawdust has appeared in the corners of the walls and floors? Another spoiler (and you may get the drill by now) it might not be sawdust! You guessed it; it’s probably termites, and specifically, termite poo.

These droppings are called ‘frass’ and are found commonly from dry wood termites. Once frass is accumulated it looks an awful lot like sawdust.

So if you thought that ‘sawdust’ in the corner by the garage was from your uncle Tim’s workstation- think again. Or better yet, hire a building and pest inspector to take a look for you.

5. Doors are getting harder to open

Are you beginning to notice that the door from your bedroom to the hallway just isn’t easy to open anymore?

Hard to open doors can be caused by humidity, dampness, hot weather and other environmental impacts, but it can also be a telltale sign of termite infestation.

Hungry termites eat away at the door frames and produce a lot of moisture in the process, causing that stuck-door feel and warped door frames.
